Laboratory for the study of core strength properties

Since 2014, Lithosphere LLC has its own laboratory for the study of the mechanical properties of rocks. The obtained results are used to refine forecasts and build geomechanical models.
The laboratory is equipped with equipment for measuring core deformation characteristics. Standard and non-standard core studies are performed: measurement of mechanical and petrophysical properties of rock in reservoir conditions, taking into account pore pressure.
In the laboratory, our engineers test core samples in uniaxial and triaxial modes, determine the ultimate strength under conditions of crimping, hydrocompression, no radial deformation, etc. Range of created pressures: crimping — up to 80 MPa, porous — up to 40 MPa, temperatures — up to 150 °C.
Brazilian test is also performed, the simplest indirect test method to determine the tensile strength of rocks. In this test, a sample, usually a thickness equal to the radius, is compressed diametrically until failure. The fracture strength is used in the calculation of the fracture pressure.

Study of core strength properties
  • Changes in sample dimensions during compression testing
  • Compressive and tensile strength
  • Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio
  • Continuous recording of longitudinal (P) and transverse (S) velocities during loading and unloading
  • Poroelasticity coefficient Biot
  • Liquid permeability of the sample
